The development of the M26 tank started in 1942: it was the achievement of researches that had started in 1938 with the M2 tank, then the M3 and the M4. The name "Pershing" was given in memoriam of the founder of Tank Corps. The M26 was used from 1945, with the German campaign. Thanks to the armor and its powerful canon of 90mm, the M26 was capable of rivalizing with the german Tiger tanks. They continued using it until the 1950s, and for the Korean War. Its evolution ended with the following three versions: M46, M47, M48, and M60.
